The Art of Contemporary Shibari Exhibit

The beauty of rope bondage as an art form is being celebrated in a collection of photographs on display in Houston through June 3^rd as part of the world-renowned Fotofest 2012. The At of Contemporary Shibari show is the largest assemblage of rope bondage images brought together in one brick-and-mortar art show that we know of to date – featuring 18 artists from North America and Europe with over 160 images on display in 6 halls and gallery rooms at Mother Dog studios, one of the longest running galleries in the heart of Houston's thriving art warehouse district.

This is a hallmark event for the recognition of the art of rope bondage in the U.S. The biennial Fotofest is known for attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to Houston from across the globe to view collections of artistic photographic images.

I felt honored to be among the invited contributors to this show that strives to bring the aesthetics of rope restraint into the public eye and the hearts of art collectors. During the evenings of the opening weekend the gallery open-house was alive with shibari demonstrations by some of the world-class riggers that were in attendance.

The gallery visitors on the first two nights were enthralled by rope bondage suspensions by the likes of contributing artists Charlie B, Dallas Kink, Lord Neptune, Lew Rubens, and Doctor Z (featured 3rd down on the left), all working their magic on the talented models whose poise and grace helped demonstrate to the onlookers how compelling rope bondage can be as artistic expression.

I believe that the beauty of what it is that we do when we engage in rope restraint is making headway into the mainstream consciousness. And the amazing images I saw displayed during the exhibition inspired me to want to delve even more deeply into rope and my attempts to capture the powerful moments that consensual bondage creates.
